"Safe Travel for All Children: Transporting Children with Special Health Care Needs"

"Safe Travel for All Children" is designed to serve as an enrichment course for child passenger safety technicians who are interested in learning more about special needs transportation. The training, which lasts approximately a day and a half, combines classroom lectures and discussions with hands-on exercises. During the training, participants will be introduced to medical conditions that can impact restraint selection and have the opportunity to investigate and install specialized restraint systems. The training concludes with a proficiency exam that evaluates the student's ability to assess appropriate restraints and to demonstrate proper use and installation.

Over 200 child passenger safety technicians from around the country have completed the course and 40 have met the requirements to instruct the training. New Child Passenger Safety Training Available for EMS Providers

"Improving Occupant Protection for Non-Critical Pediatric Patients in Ambulances: A Training Curriculum for EMS Personnel" was designed to teach EMS personnel about selection and installation of ambulance-specific restraints and some types of conventional child restraints on the ambulance cot. General occupant protection principles and policy and protocol development are also addressed in the four-hour training, which combines lecture with hands-on exercises.

Course instructors are required to be certified child passenger safety technicians with current experience in the field of emergency medical services. A disk containing all of the course materials is available for $25, which includes shipping and handling.

New Training Available for Hospital Nursery Staff

"Transporting Low Birth Weight and Premature Infants" was developed to provide staff in hospital nurseries with guidelines for developing and/implementing protocols for monitoring low birth weight and premature infants in car safety seats. The training provides a basic overview of child passenger safety to staff responsible for monitoring premature infants in car safety seats and information on appropriate restraints for low birth weight and premature infants. The 4-hour training, which comes lecture with hands-on exercises, can also be adapted for child passenger safety technicians interested in learning more about transporting premature infants.

Course instructors are required to be certified child passenger safety technicians with current experience working with premature infants and car safety seats. A disk containing all of the course materials is available for $25, which includes shipping and handling.
